There are more than 30 different varieties of monitors, ranging in size from 8 in. to more than 10 ft. long. The Emerald Tree Monitor known for its vivid coloration is the only known monitor to be omnivorous, feeding on fruit, berries, insects and small animals. It thrives in tropical forests, palm swamps and cocoa plantations in New Guinea and Australia.
