The Ceratosaurus from schleich® DINOSAURS was a carnivorous dinosaur that lived around 150 million years ago in the Late Jurassic period. Two bumps at the eyes and a large horn on the nose were made of bone. They were used either in combat or to deter rivals. On its back were also numerous spike-like bones. The many bumps and plates gave it its name: Ceratosaurus means “horned lizard.”

The Tyrannosaurus rex looked very menacing, but was hardly capable of using it short front legs equipped with two claws, as they could not even reach its mouth. At nearly seven metres in height and thirteen metres long, the Tyrannosaurus rex was probably not a particularly good hunter, but rather a scavenger that fed on what other animals left behind. It had over fifty teeth, measuring over 15 cm in length, but it didn’t use them to chew, but to tear, swallowing its food in large pieces. In order to better perceive depths while hunting for food, the eyes of the Tyrannosaurus rex were pointed forwards, allowing the field of vision of its eyes to overlap.

CARNOTAURUS

The Carnotaurus is a meat-eating predator from the Late Cretaceous. It lived about 70 million years ago. The only skeleton ever found of it was dug up in Argentina. The Carnotaurus was 9 metres in length and estimated to weigh 1.5 to 2 tonnes. Its snout was more rounded than that of its relatives and its teeth looked like crooked knife blades. It was undoubtedly one of the most dangerous predators of its time.

VELOCIRAPTOR

Velociraptors were likely very intelligent dinosaurs that hunted in packs. Although they were only 60 cm in height, these carnivores were able to overpower significantly larger prey. These dinosaurs reached speeds of up to 65 kilometres an hour and were capable of quick turns thanks to their stiff tails. To consume their prey, Velociraptors had at their disposal eighty sharp, crooked teeth in their flat snout, some of which 2.5 cm in length. The velociraptor is considered to have been one of the most intelligent and fastest dinosaurs. A formidable hunter.

The Dunkleosteus lived 130-150 million years before the first dinosaurs. It was a fearless hunter who could snap incredibly fast and ate large sharks, and even its own kind if no other prey was to be found. Fossils of fish, which were only half digested, have often been discovered alongside its skeleton. Scientists therefore believe that the armoured fish was not able to chew very well and swallowed it prey in large pieces. It was named after the palaeontologist David Dunkle. The word “osteos” is Greek for “bone”.

After the Compsognathus and the Velociraptor, the Dilophosaurus was one of the fastest prehistoric saurians. Despite its six metre-long body, it weighed only 500 kg and had long, powerful hind legs, with which it could easily reach speeds of up to 38 km/h. It had two striking bone crests on its skull, which also led to it being called the “Double Crested Lizard”. They were indeed big and long, but too thin to defend itself with. Scientists believe that they were used to impress rivals.
