Un meteorit es dirigeix cap a la terra i molts presagien la fi del món. Tintín acudeix a l'observatori astronòmic on coneix el professor Calys. Per sort els presagis no es compleixen i només arriba a la terra un fragment del meteorit, que cau a l'oceà Àrtic. En advertir la presència d'un element desconegut, el professor Calys organitza una expedició al navili Aurora, de la qual formen part Tintín i el capità Haddock.
