A los elefantes se les llama también paquidermos. Y sin embargo, su piel es tan sensible, que pueden incluso quemársela. Por eso a menudo, los elefantes se rocían con varias capas de barro. Contra el sofocante calor tiene el efecto de una refrescante ″compresa de gel frío″. Con sus grandes orejas, el elefante no oye mejor que los otros animales, pero le sirven para soportar mejor el calor africano. El oso polar es, junto con el oso grizzly, el depredador terrestre más grande de la tierra. Con un peso de más de 500 kilos y una longitud de casi tres metros, este oso es el doble de grande que un tigre siberiano. Para poder aguantar el extremo frío ártico, los osos polares tienen una gruesa capa de grasa. Además, poseen una capa de pelaje subcutáneo y una capa de pelo transparente. De esta manera pueden nadar y cazar a muy bajas temperaturas. Los osos polares son muy buenos nadadores y han llegado a ser avistados a 300 kilómetros de la costa. Al buscar comida, los osos polares utilizan su agudo sentido del olfato. ¡Incluso pueden percibir un olor a un kilómetro y medio de distancia o enterrado en la nieve a un metro de profundidad! Sus sentidos auditivo y de la vista son comparables a los del hombre. Los osos polares son solitarios, pero no tienen un territorio fijo y les gusta jugar entre ellos. El apareamiento tiene lugar en mayo y durante el embarazo la osa polar casi triplica su peso normal.
