NAVALUM es el primer juego de mesa de estrategia naval, que facilita de forma clara la comprensión de la gran importancia del comercio y las líneas de comunicación marítimas, en el desarrollo de los pueblos y civilizaciones.
Es un pequeño laboratorio en el que se pueden comprender y reproducir las grandes migraciones, colonizaciones, invasiones, caídas y nacimientos de imperios, alianzas y estrategias. También puede apreciarse de forma transparente desde un punto de vista global, la realidad geopolítica de algunos conflictos actuales.
NAVALUM se ubica en la era de la navegación a vela, cuando aún no se habían construido los grandes canales de Suez y Panamá. Cuando tener el viento a favor – el barlovento – significaba tener una ventaja táctica, y la ausencia de viento significaba tener la flota parada. Y como en la actualidad, cuando más del 80% del transporte mundial de mercancías se realizaba por vía marítima.
Incluye los espacios marítimos, mares y océanos, además de una representación de toda la geografía terrestre adaptada a la dinámica marítima del juego, por lo que no guarda proporciones ni fidelidad cartográficas.
Los espacios marítimos contemplan el alta mar, las aguas costeras, y las aguas polares donde se desarrollan los distintos tipos de navegación.
Los espacios terrestres se dividen en regiones geográficas. Se representan los principales accidentes geográficos que han condicionado el desarrollo y la expansión de los pueblos, como las cuencas de los grandes ríos, las altas cordilleras, los mares interiores, los desiertos, los archipiélagos y los territorios insulares
Asimismo se establecen diversas pa-regiones, que a su vez contienen diversas regiones geográficas.
