Megatherium, l’anomenat ‘peress gegant’, era un parent dels mandrossos moderns. Aquesta espècie en particular, Megatherium americanum, era la més gran d’aquest tipus. Va buscar plantes a Amèrica del Sud durant el Plistocè i es va extingir fa només deu mil anys.

Història: Megatherium americanum va ser nomenat científicament per primera vegada l’any 1796 per l’eminent anatomista francès i "pare de la paleontologia", Georges Cuvier. Va reconèixer que es tractava d’un peress gegant extingit, la qual cosa era important en aquell moment perquè el concepte de prehistòria només s’acabava d’entendre. El va anomenar Megatherium, que significa "bèstia gran".
Nom científic: Megatherium americanum
Característiques: Megatherium americanum era un gran mamífer que menjava plantes amb potes tossudes i braços relativament llargs. Estava cobert de pèl i tenia un crani rom amb dents forts, que es poden veure a la nostra joguina Giant Sloth esculpida per experts. Tenia una pelvis ampla i una cua curta, i podia equilibrar-se en una postura de trípode a la gatzoneta. Les grans urpes de les mans l’ajudaven a tirar les branques per alimentar-se de les fulles, i potser també tenia una llengua llarga. Va arribar als 20 peus de llarg, la mida d’un elefant.
Mida: aquesta figura de joguina de Giant Sloth fa 4,5 polzades d’alçada i 3,5 polzades de llarg.
